For ceramics enthusiasts, the internet is an inexhaustible source of content and information. Nevertheless, literature on ceramics remains as popular as ever. Waanders Publishers therefore offers a diverse range of books on ceramics. Taking a variety of approaches, our books – accompanied, of course, by illustrations – explore a single common theme: ceramics.

Recommended Titles

We’d like to highlight three ceramics books from our range. All three offer a distinctive perspective and approach ceramics in their own unique way.

Porcelain fever

In Porcelain Fever, written by Denise Campbell, Laura Smeets and others, the origins and development of porcelain are described. Under the patronage of Augustus the Strong, the first porcelain was successfully produced on European soil in 1708. This proved to be the starting point for a veritable “porcelain fever” across Europe. Madame de Pompadour, Louis XV’s mistress, emerged as a driving force behind porcelain production. This book is about ceramics most popular form from that period.

Pioneering Ceramics

Ceramics are timeless. This is clearly demonstrated in the ceramics book Pioneering Ceramics. Esther van der Hoorn and Esther Muñoz Grootveld draw connections between modern ceramic art and that of the past. Both surprising similarities and telling differences come to light. Here’s a sneak preview: although the basic formula for ceramics has remained the same throughout the centuries, the world to which makers respond has changed significantly. As far as we are concerned, Pioneering Ceramics is also a pioneer among ceramics books.

Bouke de Vries: Unbroken

Unbroken is the apt title of this book on ceramics by Bouke de Vries. Anyone familiar with De Vries will know that this curator has elevated the accentuation of cracks in ceramics to an art form. De Vries has spent the vast majority of his life in England, where he was primarily engaged in reconstructing broken objects. Nowadays, however, deconstruction has become his trademark. Using kintsugi – a Japanese, professional ceramic technique – he glues shards together with lacquer containing gold

This bilingual edition of Unbroken richly illustrates and brings together the highlights of De Vries’s international career. The ceramics book also features contributions from leading art connoisseurs and experts.

In conjunction with this book, an exhibition is being held at the Princessehof National Ceramics Museum in Leeuwarden until 26 August 2026.
