Konrad Klapheck (1935) is one of the most important and interesting personalities in the history of modern art. His monumental still lifes of heavily stylized appliances and industrial objects give shape to icons and demons of the modern era. The German artist transforms typewriters, sewing machines, irons, showerheads and shoes into human archetypes.

Klapheck’s unique oeuvre defies categorization. Not least because after four decades he began – seemingly abruptly – to orchestrate his paintings around the human figure. A late change of style that few artists would dare or survive. But Klapheck managed it.
