Description

Text: Herman Aarts

In 1465, the Dominicans founded the Broerenklooster monastery on Het Eiland, a narrow strip of land north of the old town centre of Zwolle. The Broerenkerk church, which belonged to the monastery, survived the Iconoclastic Fury, the Reformation and the French period. In 1982, the church was closed for worship.
The construction of the monastery complex was no coincidence, because in the fifteenth century, Zwolle's commercial function flourished and the city grew into a religious and educational centre.
In the 1970s, the monastery, or what was left of it, was largely demolished. The Michelin-starred restaurant De Librije moved into the building that used to house the monastery's library. Restoration of the Broerenkerk began in 1983, revealing spectacular vault paintings beneath many layers of whitewash.
This richly illustrated book tells the remarkable history of Zwolle and the Broerenkerk. With “Waanders In de Broeren”, history comes back to life!
