Bas Kosters beweegt zich al meer dan twintig jaar vrij tussen kunst, mode en maatschappelijke betrokkenheid. Sinds zijn internationale doorbraak in 2003 bouwt hij aan een eigenzinnig universum vol stralende, vertederende en soms ontregelende figuren. In wandkleden, poppen, kostuums, installaties, tekeningen en keramiek maakt hij moeilijke emoties bespreekbaar met lichtvoetigheid, subtiele humor en rake teksten.

Dit boek bundelt tien jaar autonoom werk rond thema’s als liefde en aandacht, eenzaamheid, veiligheid, wulpsigheid, kapitalisme, gender en queerness. Kosters beschouwt zijn werk als een handreiking om te functioneren in een wereld die persoonlijke vrijheid en geluk nastreeft, maar tegelijk een zekere mate van ontheemding oproept. Eenzaamheid, liefde, competitie, de jacht naar geluk en de vraag ‘wie ben ik en wie mag ik zijn?’: onder de laag van bonte en vitale vrolijkheid gaan fundamentele menselijke emoties, verlangens en levensvragen schuil.

Since his international breakthrough in 2003, Bas Kosters has, for more than twenty years, moved freely between art, fashion and social engagement, developing a distinctive universe of radiant, endearing and sometimes disruptive figures. In tapestries, dolls, costumes, installations, drawings and ceramics, he brings difficult emotions into the open with light-heartedness, subtle humour and poignant texts.

This book brings together ten years of autonomous work on themes such as love and attention, loneliness, safety, lasciviousness, capitalism, gender and queerness. Kosters regards his work as a guide for functioning in a world that pursues personal freedom and happiness, yet simultaneously evokes a certain sense of displacement. Loneliness, love, competition, the pursuit of happiness and the question ‘who am I and who am I allowed to be?’ unfold beneath a surface of colourful and vibrant cheerfulness, revealing fundamental human emotions, desires and questions about life.
