‘Ongekende durf, eigenzinnigheid en kracht’: al in 1890 prezen critici de stoutmoedige
stijl van Betzy Akersloot-Berg (1850-1922).

Zij was leerling van Hendrik Willem Mesdag, pionier, wereldreiziger en gepassioneerd kust – en zeeschilder. Deze rijk geïllustreerde publicatie toont nieuwe inzichten in haar kunstenaarschap, reizen, atelierpraktijk en betekenis. Het vormt de eerste omvangrijke Nederlandstalige uitgave over Akersloot-Berg sinds het jaar 2000. Zij verdient deze herwaardering, naast het aan haar werk gewijde museum in haar woonhuis op Vlieland en sporadische aandacht in Noorwegen.

In 1890 critics were already describing the painting style of Betzy Akersloot-Berg (1850–1922) as being ‘Unprecedentedly daring, self-willed and powerful’. The Norwegian-Dutch artist was a pioneer, a world traveller and one of the foremost female marine and landscape painters of her time.

Akersloot-Berg sought out the power of the sea and the changing weather wherever she went. From the rugged Norwegian coast and the Lofoten islands to the beaches of Scheveningen and Vlieland, her vigorous brushwork and impressive seascapes made a significant impact.

This lavishly illustrated publication offers new insights into her artistry, travels and studio practice. It also explores her close friendship with Hendrik Willem Mesdag and Sientje Mesdag-van Houten, as well as her remarkable position as an independent, internationally active artist and businesswoman.
